Chapter 8

Nyx watched the myriad of emotion play across Adrian’s face. She wasn’t sure how she ended up with her head in his lap, but as she looked up at him, she realized she’d had the best sleep of her life, but she could sense his discomfort.

“Sorry,” she whispered as she sat and leaned against the couch. There wasn’t much space between them, but he didn’t seem to mind that. She didn’t understand why she was so clingy. Or that’s what she thought she was being, but considering she’d never been one to allow much touching in general, this was a far stretch than she was used to, which to her spelled trouble.

“It’s okay,” he replied softly, “I’m not used to waking up next to a beautiful woman.”

Oh, he was good. That small smirk said it all. Her mate was a lady’s man, and she could see why. He was an exceptional male specimen. With his hair, dark as night mixed with the brightness of his emerald eyes—add in the perfect smile and large body built for protecting, and he was any woman’s fantasy. Nyx wasn’t competition against the many beauties who attended the fights just to get a man like Adrian’s attention. Nope, she wasn’t an attention whore—or all that assertive.

Her beast growled, not at all happy with their discovery, and she lowered her eyes. Apparently, there better not be too many women climbing all over him.

Make that none, she decided when the other beast growled. The dragons were certainly on the same page when it came to Adrian. He was theirs.

Nyx wouldn’t be able to handle seeing those dirty little tramps fawning over her mate. Even knowing his profession and knowing it entailed hordes of groupies who went to the fights hoping for a special ending with one of the winners—or hell even the losers won in the end. She hadn’t wanted, nor needed to know, any of this information, but Emi had made it impossible to avoid during the fight. The whole time chattering on and on about who she planned to spend the night with, and so on and so forth.

Needing to change the subject Nyx said, “I bet this is strange for you, huh?”

Adrian chuckled. “You could say that, but I don’t think strange is necessarily a bad thing.”

“What if you end up not being human anymore, like me?” she asked in hushed tones. That was her biggest fear. If she accepted everything that had happened, and what was going to happen, then she’d irrevocably change his life, too. That wasn’t fair.

What if he didn’t want to change?

Adrian didn’t answer right away, and she could almost hear the wheels turning as he thought his words over carefully. Nyx fidgeted on the couch unable to sit still. “It’s okay if you don’t want this—regardless of what Pollux said, you do have a choice,” she said hoping to ease him, but her beasts didn’t like that one little bit. They whined at the knowledge that she was giving him an out even if it meant they’d suffer for the rest of her life.
